The New Caledonian Coffees

New Caledonia has gained world recognition as a coffee producer, in particular with the production of its Leroy Coffee (also spelled Le Roy). This coffee of exceptional quality is comparable to the legendary Jamaican Blue Mountain.

In conjunction with local producers, like Patrice Mülher, Pacifique have been leaders in the revitalization of coffee production. New Caledonian coffee is now rebuilding its international reputation.

Philippe Jobin, in his “Coffees from around the World”, indicates that New Caledonian Arabica had been among the best in the world due to its zingy flavor and aroma. Why "had been" ? - because local production from the nineteen-sixties onwards, during the time of the nickel boom in New Caledonia and the associated exodus of the rural labor force, coupled with the ravages of the “electric ants” (Wasmannia auropunctata), had become almost non-existent.

Leroy Coffee is produced from Arabica Laurina. It was introduced into New Caledonia by the Marist brothers in around 1860 - 1880 from the island of Réunion.

The other name given to Arabica Laurina is “Pointed Bourbon”: ‘Bourbon’ after the original name of the island of Réunion and ‘Pointed’ from the long shape of the bean. This coffee tree is characterized by its small leaves which relate it to the tea plant.

The Leroy coffee plantations are located on the "leeward” west coast, in particular at Koné, Sarraméa and Mount Dore (see map).

The territorial authorities have now introduced production incentives to support the revival of the coffee industry. (For more information see the Southern Province website).

The Forbidden Bay Estate

Royal Pacifique has joined forces with Patrice Mülher, the owner and operator of the Inaccessible Bay Estate coffee plantations, on the west coast or leeward side of the island.

The first commercial harvest is planned for Christmas 2005.

In addition to Leroy Coffee, Patrice Mülher has also brought Yellow and Red Bourbon seedlings into production.

The young coffee bushes are irrigated by an Israeli-patented solar-powered drip system with water being gravity-fed from a spring 3 kilometers away.   Domaine de la Baie Inaccessible
